伝説のプロパガンダ誌、再復刻！
戦争の負の遺産ながら、日本デザイン史における金字塔といえる圧倒的グラフィックが蘇る。

第2次世界大戦中、日本の国威や軍事力を諸外国にPRすることを目的として、日本政府と陸軍を後ろ楯に東方社からプロパガンダ誌『FRONT』が刊行されました。写真、グラフィックデザイン、印刷、造本などにおいて、当時最高峰の技術をもつ人材が集結し、1942年から1945年までの4年間、計10冊が制作されています。

そのうち創刊号「海軍号」、「満州国建設号」、「空軍（航空戦力）号」が、東方社でグラフィックデザインを担当した多川精一氏（故人）の監修のもと、［復刻版 第Ⅰ期］として1989年8 月に平凡社から再刊されました。その後［第Ⅱ期］として「陸軍号」「落下傘部隊号」「鉄（生産力）号」が、［第Ⅲ期］として「華北建設号」「フィリピン号」「インド号」「戦時東京号」が復刻。全10冊が再刊されました。

本書『復刻保存版 FRONT Ⅰ』は平凡社が再刊した『FRONT』復刻版［第Ⅰ期］（多川精一監修）を底本としています。

1989年復刻版はオリジナルの判型どおりA3サイズで制作されましたが、本書は各号をB4（変型判、横257mm・縦360mm）サイズに縮刷したうえで3冊を合本にしています。また復刻版の付録だった解説小冊子も、再刊に合わせ、新たな解説をくわえて本書に合本収録しました。

縮刷合本に際しては、デジタルリマスター技術により1989年復刻版の印刷を再現しましたが、版面の制約により一部レイアウトに変更を加えています。

戦時中のプロパガンダ媒体という性質上、今日ふさわしくない描写もありますが、戦争の負の遺産を後世に伝える歴史資料としての価値に鑑み、そのまま掲載しました。

Legendary Propaganda Magazine—Reprinted Once Again!
An overwhelming graphic masterpiece, a negative legacy of war yet a milestone in Japan's design history, returns to life.

During World War II, the propaganda magazine "FRONT" was published by Tohosha, backed by the Japanese government and army, to promote Japan's national prestige and military strength to foreign countries. The project brought together the finest talents in photography, graphic design, printing, and bookbinding at the time. Over the four years from 1942 to 1945, a total of 10 issues were produced.

Among these, the inaugural issues—"Navy," "Manchurian Construction," and "Air Force (Aerial Power)"—were reprinted in August 1989 as the first phase of the reissue series under the supervision of Seiji Tagawa, the graphic designer at Tohosha (now deceased). Subsequently, the second phase included the issues "Army," "Paratroopers," and "Iron (Industrial Power)," while the third phase featured "North China Construction," "Philippines," "India," and "Wartime Tokyo," completing the reprint of all 10 issues.

This book, "FRONT I: Reprint Preservation Edition," is based on the first-phase reprint series (supervised by Seiji Tagawa) published by Heibonsha.

While the 1989 reprints were produced in their original A3 size, this book condenses and compiles the three issues into a smaller B4 size (257mm x 360mm). It also includes the explanatory booklets that accompanied the reprints, featuring updated commentary to match this re-publication.

For this condensed compilation, digital remastering technology was employed to reproduce the printing quality of the 1989 reprints. However, some layout adjustments were made due to size constraints.

Given its nature as wartime propaganda, certain depictions may be deemed inappropriate by today’s standards. Nevertheless, recognizing its value as a historical document conveying the negative legacy of war, the content has been preserved in its original form.
