土門拳賞を受賞した「結界」から約8年振りに刊行された写真集。

「写真はその場の現実しか写せない。事実である分リアリティーがあり、インパクトもあるかに見えるが指し示す「真実」とはほど遠い。

もっとも私に「指し示す真実が見えるか」と言うと、そんなことはなく、写す対象も小さな出来事だけだ。写真一枚一枚に思い入れがあり、物語があり、当て字のような仕掛けがあろうとも、真実の方向を向いているのかも疑わしい。

そもそも、その物語でさえごく個人的なことばかりだ。

それでも雑事の合間の人々との触れ合いも、光の中に浮かび上がる風景も、多分等価に真の何かを指し示しているように思うのだ。

This photo book by Nobuo Shimose is the first publication in approximately eight years since the Domon Ken Award winning photo book "Kekkai" (Barrier).

"Photographs can only capture the reality of the moment. Because they depict factual events, they seem to possess both reality and impact. However, what they point to as 'truth' is often far removed.

When asked if I see the 'truth they point to,' the answer is no. The subjects I capture are just small events. Each photograph contains emotional investment and tells a story, but even so, it is questionable whether they are truly pointing in the direction of truth.

After all, even those stories are deeply personal matters.

Yet, I believe that the casual interactions with people and the landscapes that emerge in the light may well be pointing to something genuinely true.
