イタリア出身の写真家ジョバンニ・ピリアルヴ氏とイギリス出身の写真家リー・チャップマン氏による写真集『トウキョウカンバセーションズ』。

2006年から東京を拠点に活動するジョヴァンニ氏は、日本の豊かな自然を身近に感じながらも、都心の奥深い地域にも魅力を感じています。これらの風景は、宗教的な意味で美しいものではないかもしれませんが、都市の多くを構成する熱狂的な動き、現代性、静かでゆっくりと色あせた風景が常に混在し、その変化に心を奪われ続けているそうです。 その瞬間は、非常に日本的で、なぜか調和的しているように見えます。

リー氏もまた、生まれ故郷イギリスの色あせた環境を離れ、東京の荒れ果てた街や日本そのものに魅力を感じるようになりました。世界共通でありながら、日本らしさを感じさせる状況や表情。それゆえ、来日して何年も経った今、リー氏が主に撮影し、積極的に探し求めているのは、日本のこの側面です。徐々に失われつつある日本の過去は、今もなお切実なものとして存在しているのです。

写真集はカラーパート40P、モノクロパート40Pの両A面仕様。昔ながらのやきとり屋やガード下の居酒屋、ホームのベンチで寝入る酔っ払い、歌舞伎町やアメ横の街並み、シャッターから顔をのぞかせるおばあさんなど、お二人の外国人写真家のとらえたこれらの瞬間は、私たち日本人にとっても懐かしく愛おしいものになっています。

Tokyo Conversations" is a collection of photographs by Italian photographer Giovanni Piliarvu and British photographer Lee Chapman.

Giovanni, who has been based in Tokyo since 2006, is familiar with the rich natural beauty of Japan, but is also attracted to areas deep within the city center. These landscapes may not be beautiful in a religious sense, but the constant mix of frenetic movement, modernity, and quiet, slowly fading landscapes that make up much of the city keeps him captivated by the changes. The moments seem very Japanese and somehow harmonious.

Lee, too, has left the faded surroundings of his native England and found himself drawn to the deserted streets of Tokyo and to Japan itself. The situation and the look of the city are universal and yet uniquely Japanese. It is therefore this aspect of Japan that Lee primarily photographs and actively seeks out now, many years after arriving in Japan. The Japanese past, which is slowly being lost, still exists as something that is desperately needed.

The photo book has a 40 pages of color part and another 40pages of black-and-white part, both A-side specifications. Old-fashioned yakitori restaurants, taverns under guards, drunks sleeping on platform benches, the streets of Kabukicho and Ameyoko, old ladies peeking out from shutters... these moments captured by the two foreign photographers are nostalgic and endearing to us Japanese as well.

This is a wonderful collection of photographs that touches the heartstrings of Japanese people.
